Washington & Jefferson College takes a holistic approach to evaluating applications for admission, weighing each of the individual components in the following order:
High School Performance
An applicant’s high school grade point average and class rank (if available) will be considered in the context of the rigor of their chosen curriculum and the Admission Committee will look for a minimum course distribution on a student’s transcript. If offered, the Admission Committee views strong performance in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and College in High School courses favorably. Credit is typically awarded for AP scores of 4 or 5, IB (HL) exam scores of 5, and is considered for three or four credit college courses taken in high school.
Standardized test scores are only one factor in our admission process and serve to affirm a student’s academic potential in conjunction with their high school performance. Students who feel that their high school credentials are a more accurate representation of their ability to succeed in college are encouraged to apply under our Score-Optional policy, which places greater weight on the rest of their application materials. Our middle 50% range is typically 1060-1260 on the SAT Math and Evidence Based Reading and Writing sections and an ACT composite score of 24-30.

Co-Curricular Involvement and Accomplishments
W&J Presidents take an active role in their experience inside and outside the classroom. We expect candidates for admission to do the same and demonstrate a strong commitment to school or community activities that match their passions.
Meeting with an Admission Counselor
Candidates are encouraged, but not required, to meet with an admission counselor. This conversation provides the Admission Committee with context to a candidate’s application, and enables the student to learn more about the distinct opportunities available to them as a future W&J President.
The personal statement provides insight into an applicant that cannot be learned from any other document a student submits. It should be approximately 250-500 words, well-written, and tell a story that is distinct to that student.
One recommendation from a teacher or high school counselor is required.
